Guide
What the webcam test checks
Most webcam testers only show whether a picture appears. This test goes further and measures the things that actually affect how you look on a call — and explains each result in plain language.
- Browser support — the MediaDevices API is available and the page is served over HTTPS.
- Camera detection — how many video devices your system exposes, including virtual cameras.
- Video stream — the camera starts and delivers frames, with the negotiated resolution.
- Frame rate — real frames delivered per second, not just what the driver claims.
- Lighting — average luminance; too dark makes video grainy and lowers the frame rate.
- Sharpness — a Laplacian-variance focus score computed on the live image.
- Live motion — detects frozen streams, closed privacy shutters, or still-image virtual cameras.
- Microphone — optional input level check so you know people can hear you.
Camera not detected?
If the test fails, it tells you why and lists fixes for your situation — for example closing other apps that use the camera, or allowing browser access in Windows or macOS privacy settings.
FAQ
Webcam test FAQ
How do I know if my webcam is working?
Click “Run webcam test”. If the video stream check passes and you see yourself in the preview, your webcam works. The remaining checks tell you how well it works.
What is a good webcam frame rate?
30 fps is standard for video calls and looks smooth. 24–29 fps is acceptable. Below 15 fps, video looks choppy — usually caused by poor lighting (the camera lengthens exposure), a USB 2.0 bottleneck, or CPU load.
Why does my webcam look blurry?
Common causes are a smudged lens, auto-focus struggling in low light, or the camera being too close. Clean the lens, add light in front of you, and sit at least 50 cm away. The sharpness check measures this objectively.
What does “frozen video” mean?
If consecutive frames are identical, the camera may be stuck, covered by a privacy shutter, or it may be a virtual camera showing a still image.
Is the webcam test private?
Yes. All analysis happens in your browser. No image, video, or audio is sent anywhere.
